Lessons
Courses and scholarly works conducted with a systematic, organized, and hierarchical approach.
Lessons
Since 2017, various courses have been offered at the Istanbul Circle of Knowledge. These courses provide a systematic, structured, and hierarchical approach to the rational sciences and, to some extent, certain linguistic disciplines, offering students the opportunity to study these fields through a gradual and holistic approach.
The courses at the Circle are text-centric. Rather than being in a seminar or interview format on certain topics, the courses are based on teaching the robust texts written by great imams in the history of Islamic sciences for the purpose of training scholars, which have been taught as textbooks in the madrasa tradition. These texts are read and interpreted word by word, the phrases are analyzed in detail, and the arguments are posited and verified. From time to time, various inquiries are conducted, comparisons are made with contemporary thought when necessary, and even new conceptualizations are developed.
Our main focus at the Circle is not merely to study the relevant issue precisely within its historical context and memorize opinions, but rather to acquire a faculty (malakah) in that science and internalize its raison d'être. Particularly in intermediate and advanced courses, the relevant texts are read by effectively utilizing the tools of logic and debate, and even occasionally resorting to contemporary text-reading strategies such as deconstruction.
Istanbul Knowledge Circle places great importance on the gradual study of Islamic sciences. Accordingly, the Circle's courses are planned to consist of three phases, each comprising two levels, thereby creating a six-stage program. In line with this objective, the first level of the intermediate phase has been largely completed to date.
